Sender: The moondoggies as an established band in the neo & new folk scene. Also the concert being held at Kilby Court says that it is something worth taking note of because they always have kick ass stuff there, so the positioning and hierarchy of "Kilby Court" is also important. The poster will primarily be used at Kilby Court to gain peoples attention of The Moondoggies coming to this venue... also/and around down town SLC.
Message: The Moon doggies are a fun and very talented neo folk acoustic band and are playing at the Kilby Court SLC 6.15.12, www.moondoggiesmusic.com is important to direct people to their site to get familiar with their music and see if they want to come to their Kilby show... about the moondoggies... they are an acoustic outfit that is really defining a new genre and interest for younger crowds in folk based/storytelling music. Reference to the folk and straight forward approach to their quirky and delightful music is important. Iconic images that suggest folk music should be included such as an acoustic guitar, folk color palettes, microphones and such.
Audience: Neo Folkers, Hipsters, Young & Old, lo-fi lovers, Acoustic music lovers, Kilby Court fiends.
Purpose Objective: Illustrate/Advertise The Moondoggies w hand rendered and fitting typographic style to reference their "aesthetic" set with either linocut or wood block or hand drawn and scanned in printed with some very lo fi pinhole images of dogs, a microphone and an old man that I took last summer. I may try a few versions to see what fits with this best either by means of the type being places on the photos with illustration over the image or just redraw these images altogether as a basis for the poster.
Specs: Hand done/printed typography to fit their aesthetic, sound and image as young hip folk band that attracts a very large audience of young and old acoustic and folk based music lovers to their concerts, poster based lo-fi pin hole photos that I have taken of dogs and recording equipment I set up on the beach then combined with the image and any other illustrative renderings the poster or message may require.
Thematic Statement: pleasing colors, humor, energy, quirkiness, folk-ness, hand done elements and the importance of Kilby Court in the visual hierarchy are all important aspects. The goal is to let people know they will have a good time and see a great band by coming to this show of an up and coming/semi established hip folk band.
while the above photos hold promise and allowed for some ideas to be generated they weren't conveying the needed message and content... perhaps an interesting make for a Moondoggies LP would suit this option but for now the experimentation I did with them just didn't fit and wasn't worth pursuing any further, moving on to further options
Challenges: Directing people to a well established band on the one hand but of a semi obscure genre that is just beginning to make headway and be in with young music lovers who follow music.
a very different style I could have went with, trying to find the moondoggies "voice" with all of these, they all help in one way or another.
experiment with angle composition
sketch up experimenting with guitar/text combo's
a sketch for hand done version I made which I may go back and color/edit digitally?
comp 1(needs strings to go further)
comp 2 (my least favorite)
comp 3, (I feel visually the best overall)
comp 3 w crisp blue backing
A simpler version w some humorous stereotypical folk references
FINAL version that communicates very well with exact full details nice balance and hierarchy
